Sangiovese is a variety dominant in the Tuscan region of Italy, the word literally meaning “blood of Jove” and is best known for it’s role in Chianti. Being a bit of a Chameleon, it is a wonderful grape for wine making, allowing so many expressions of styles. At Kingsley Grove we use this versatile grape to make Rosé, sparkling Rosé and other styles of red. Whilst it is becoming more widely grown in Australia, it was first introduced in numbers in the 1960’s. It is a variety that loves the Queensland summer and is well suited to the climate. In fact we believe that it is made for Queensland vineyards.
This vintage has been made in a Chianti Classico style which are generally very earthy and rustic with good, but more subtle, tannins. The aromas and taste are reminiscent of dark cherries and strawberries, with textures of dark chocolate underpinned with high acidity which makes it go very well with food.
This vintage carries the name ‘Brian’s Bin’ which is a homage to Patricia’s late brother who used to turn the fermenting grape must in bins by hand in our early days of production. As with the Italian labelling of ‘Chianti Classico’ for only the best Chiantis, this is our reserve badge for this much loved variety.
