| Black
grape variety originally from the Rhône River
Valley area in France, but grown widely
throughout the world and most notably in
Australia and California. Typically used to
produce deeply coloured, full-bodied red wines
with black cherry, berry and currant flavours,
often with meaty, bacon-like or game-like notes
and black-pepper spiciness, with high quality
versions considered to be very ageable.
Differences between New World and Old World
styles are pronounced, with Australian Shiraz
often having more bold fruit flavours, colour,
alcohol and oak treatment than traditional
French Syrah, which can be more acidic and
tannic, making them less approachable when
young. |
