White
grape variety that originated in Burgundy but is
now grown throughout the world as the dominant,
International white grape variety. It produces
wines in a number of different styles,
including:
- Light
to medium bodied, often with lemony citrus
or tart green apple flavours and bright
acidity and mineral or flint-like notes.
- Medium
to full-bodied often with sweet apple, pear,
and peach flavours and lower acidity and
creamy, nutty and buttery notes.
- Very
full-bodied with ultra-ripe peach and
tropical fruit flavours, lower acidity and
rich oaky vanilla and buttery overtones.
It
gets its oaky vanilla tones from new oak
barrel aging or oak treatment. It is also one of
the blending wines used to make Champagne and
other sparkling wines. Some of the
highest-quality wines can age, but generally it
should be drunk fairly young. |
